Study our manuscripts, those myriads
Of letters, which have past 'twixt thee and me;
Thence write our annals, and in them will be
To all whom love's subliming fire invades,
Rule and example found;
There the faith of any ground
No schismatic will dare to wound,
That sees, how Love this grace to us affords,
To make, to keep, to use, to be these his records.-- John Donne
"All the King's Men" is a series of Hornblower fan fiction stories set in a shared, coherent universe. It traces the lives and relationships of various Hornblower characters over the course of more than a decade.
We recommend you start in the middle of the ATKM series, then go back and read some of the prequels before continuing on. We've split the ATKM series into five sub-series which are logically connected and which we think should be read together; these are denoted in the table below by coloured text. Almost all the stories assume at least a passing familiarity with the events portrayed in the Hornblower movies, so we have also included hints as to which movies you should have seen to fully understand what's going on in the stories.
The following stories assume you have seen The Duel (aka The Even Chance), The Duchess and the Devil, and The Frogs and the Lobsters (aka The Wrong War):
The following assume that you have seen Mutiny and Retribution:
Note: if you don't see colours, then your browser may not support Cascading Style Sheets. In which case, start by reading "All the King's Men" and the letters that follow it.
